Who are the Anabaptists?
Anabaptism is a Christian movement that emerged during the Reformation in the 16th century, emphasizing believers’ baptism. Palmer Becker writes in Anabaptist Essentials: Ten Signs of a Unique Christian Faith three statements which capture the essence of the faith. 1) Jesus is the center of our faith. 2) Community is the center of our life. 3) Reconciliation is the center of our work. Anabaptists believe in separation from the state, nonviolence, and living simply. Several groups that are rooted in Anabaptism include Mennonites, Amish, Brethren in Christ, and Hutterites. The 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Anabaptist movement occurs on January 21, 2025.
